Album no. 189/1001
It’s the second album on this list from our mate Van the Man – and arguably the one with our least favourite songs.
While Van Morrison initially brought in his musician buddies from Astral Weeks to help with the recording, he quickly changed his mind and fired everyone. Good work.
Have you listened to this album before?
CL: No. Of course not. I hate this song. I can only assume I’ll also hate the album.
NK: It doesn’t ‘arguably’ have our least favourite song. It absolutely positively has our least favourite Van Morrison song and there is no argument.
NK: ‘Moondance’ AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA JUST KIDDING ‘MOONDANCE’ SUCKS. The thing about ‘Moondance’ is it’s probably fine, BUT it gets covered waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much, and every cover is awful. If you’ve ever been to a wedding where there was a band you know what I’m talking about. Easy listening covers of ‘Moondance’ DO NOT NEED TO EXIST. I don’t really blame Van Morrison, he didn’t know what he was unleashing. But as somebody who has worked in hospitality, specifically function centres catering for wedding receptions, hearing ‘Moondance’ just makes me wish I was dead.
CL: God, it really does, doesn’t it. I suppose if I have to pick a favourite it’s probably ‘And It Stoned Me’. Having said that… I really didn’t like this much. That was just the best of a bad bunch for me. Soz mate. I think it’s his voice. I just don’t get it.
NK: Guess what apart from ‘Moondance’ I LOVE EVERY SONG. How good is ‘Caravan’? Incredible. I think this is an album where your favourite song can change each time you listen to it. My number one track is ‘Glad Tidings’, which is about lying in your letters home and is really weirdly structured (is there a chorus? I don’t know), very inconsistent lyrically (and the knights will step forth, with their armbands/and we’ll send you glad tidings from New York) and has a badass saxophone rocking out in your right headphone. GET AMONGST IT.
When would be the best time to listen to this?
CL: MMMM never again for me? I don’t know. ACTUALLY YES I DO – this is the sort of thing that would get played on Saturday Night Jukebox, but on an easy-listening, love song dedication sort of thing.
Why has this album been included on the list?
NK: What a bloody stupid question.
Will you be listening again?
CL: No. I’m surprised to hear myself say this, but I preferred the meandering jazziness of Astral Weeks – even if it was a commercial failure.
NK: You are GODDAMN RIGHT I will be.
NK: – What happened to ‘Moondance’ isn’t Van’s fault.
