Album no. 105/1001
It’s the album that almost wasn’t, after old mate Jimi left the master tape of side A in a taxi.
Luckily, Axis: Bold as Love was made and it’s a damn fine listen, despite some critics claiming it’s the “least memorable” of the three Jimi Hendrix Experience albums. You be the judge.
Have you listened to this album before?
CL: No I haven’t. I don’t think I know any songs off this album. I suppose I didn’t mind the last one, so I’m going along for this (hopefully) exciting ride.
NK: Yeah mate, once or twice.
CL: IT’S SUCH AN EXCITING RIDE. HOT DIGGITY DAMN. I am enjoying this much more than Are You Experienced? It just sounds like everyone’s got their shit together a little more – they’re really in sync with each other. There are so many excellent tracks on here. ‘Spanish Castle Magic’ is BANG-IN. JESUS. I’m sold. I’m so totally sold.
NK: Yeah ‘Spanish Castle Magic’ is great. ‘Bold As Love’ is a cracker at the end as well. Also at a friend’s wedding they played ‘Little Wing’ when the bride walked down the aisle, and I thought that was pretty great. I really like the end of that song, it JUST gets started rocking when the fade out hits it. He gets some great guitar sounds on this.
CL: DAT FALSETTO ON ‘Wait Til Tomorrow’! Wow. I’m very happy to say that there are literally no bad songs on this album. I’m a big, big fan of ‘Castles Made of Sand’ and ‘One Rainy Wish’
When would be the best time to listen to this?
CL: Oh, anytime. It’s great.
NK: I went for a run while I was listening to this, and I don’t recommend that. The tempos vary too much, and there are too many songs that sort of float along. You hit ‘Little Wing’ and get distracted looking at a sunset or something.
Why has this album been included on the list?
CL: I think the complexity of their compositions has seriously turned up a notch on this. No more boring old blues standards with a twist! This is mind-blowing stuff. I sort of felt like their first album was really just a vehicle for Jimi to show off a bit, but everything fits together so much better here!
NK: Yeah it’s a bit of a jump from Are You Experienced?. Like you said above I think they were a bit more comfortable with each other, and with messing around in a studio. The crazy guitaring is still there, but it’s deployed a bit more tactically.
Will you be listening again?
CL: I have already gone back and listened to it a few times – and it continues to get better. This was great.
NK: Yeah mate.
