Album no. 80/1001
Buffalo Springfield were a pretty big deal with a bunch of pretty big names – Neil Young, Stephen Stills… and some other people.
But all these big personalities caused a bit of conflict, and with constant line-up changes and drug-related arrests, they broke up only a year after this was released. They only ever released 3 albums as Buffalo Springfield, before going their separate ways.
Have you listened to this album before?
CL: What’s a buffalo springfield?
NK: It’s a steamroller! I have listened to this before, but only once, and only because I knew Neil Young was in the band.
CL: This has turned into a very pleasant surprise! Standout track is probably… ‘Hung Upside Down’. I really liked it. But also ‘Sad Memory’ and ‘Everydays’ were good too.
NK: Really? I didn’t go for this much. ‘Broken Arrow’ is interesting, long, meandering, with a lot of weird different parts. I don’t mind the opener, ‘Mr Soul’, although it just sounds like a Neil Young song. I quite like the first half of ‘Bluebird’, but it loses it’s way somewhat with the banjo at the end. Didn’t really rate this.
When would be the best time to listen to this?
CL: I think this is a good album for solitary driving out on an open road.
NK: I wouldn’t recommend this album. It’s competent, but there are loads of things on this list that I would rather listen to.
CL: WOW! Harsh words!
Why has this album been included on the list?
CL: It’s a pretty weird album. First song starts off all rock and roll. Second song goes all country. Third song is a downtempo piano number – it’s like they were just trying their hand at any old thing and seeing what they were good at. Turns out they’re pretty good at most of it.
NK: I agree with you about it being all over the place. There are some good songs here for sure, but as an album it’s a bit inconsistent. There are some influential people in the band, but I’m unconvinced.
CL: Maybe that’s the problem? There were too many really good musicians that they couldn’t agree on what to do? So they did everything. And it’s a bit of a mess, but a good mess.
Will you be listening again?
CL: I’ve actually gone back and listened a few times. It’s definitely grown on me. I liked it.
NK: I doubt it. I wasn’t crazy about this.
