Album no. 67/1001
Finally, an American folk rock vocal group!
The Mamas and the Papas were two girls and two guys with great voices. They have sold close to 40 million records and been put into the rock and roll hall of fame. Make of that what you will.
Have you listened to this album before?
CL: Has anyone? No. The only song anyone will have heard is ‘California Dreamin’.
NK: I’m the same. I know ‘California Dreamin’ (best known as the song Noah Taylor is playing all through He Died With A Felafel In His Hand) and that’s about it. We heard The Beach Boys singing ‘Do You Wanna Dance’ though.
CL: God this is tame. Bleugh.
“I’m a real straight shooter if you know what I mean.”
No. I don’t know what you mean. Shut up. OH NO. This cover of ‘Do You Wanna Dance’ is an ABOMINATION. Stop. Now.
NK: ‘California Dreamin’ might be the only good song on this. I actually preferred the Beach Boy’s ‘Do You Wanna Dance’, which is surprising. ‘I Call Your Name’ is a Beatles song which I don’t really know, but this version is awful.
CL: Clearly ‘California Dreamin’ is the outlier – it is not an indication of their music whatsoever. Don’t be fooled.
When would be the best time to listen to this?
CL: I know you said you thought The Byrds were a good band to listen to on your way to church, but I think these guys trump that. Look at the bloody album cover – they look like a bunch of Sunday school misfits. In a bathtub. WITH CLOTHES ON. Weird.
NK: Do you know what’s weird, Cass Elliot is in this so-called band, and she’s got some songs I really like. ‘Make Your Own Kind of Music’ is a great pop song! I was expecting something between that and Dusty Springfield, but man. This was hard to get through.
Why has this album been included on the list?
CL: I do not know.
NK: Unsure. The harmonies maybe? This is so much less exciting than what we’ve been hearing recently.
Will you be listening again?
CL: No. This was terrible. I did not enjoy it at all.
NK: Fun fact, I went and searched the list for ‘mama’ because I did not enjoy this at all, and the next result was ‘Mama Said Knock You Out’ by LL Cool J. What a relief. I think I would have much preferred to listen to that.
