Album no. 45/1001
This is not the album with ‘Son of a Preacher Man’ on it – sorry. But it’s still a BANGING record and VERY deserving of your hard-earned listening time.
Dusty has been consistently labelled one of the best vocalists of all time, and it’s pretty easy to see why. Interestingly, she also enjoyed the musical stylings of who appeared earlier in this list. She did a cover of ‘If You Go Away’ – in English obviously.
She also enjoyed getting lost and reading maps. So she was pretty cool.
Have you listened to this album before?
CL: I’ve listened the whole album probably twice? So I’m definitely familiar with it. AND I’M EXCITED.
NK: I have only ever heard Dusty on best of compilations and movie soundtracks, I am keen for the whole album.
CL: The opening track ‘Mama Said’ is an absolute ripper of a track. I LOVE IT. My favourite by a mile and one of the best songs we’ve heard thus far. ‘Do Re Mi’ is great, and ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow’ … There are so many solid songs on here! And I mean, ‘You Don’t Own Me’ is pretty inspirational too, obviously.
NK: ‘24 HOURS FROM TULSA’. I had not heard her version of this and it’s GREAT. I feel a little bit sorry for the bloke waiting in Tulsa, but I’m too happy for Dusty to give him too much thought. This album is full of bangers though, ‘You Don’t Own Me’, ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow’ (hi Carole King!), ‘Wishin and Hopin’, the whole thing is really strong. I liked this a LOT. I like her voice and I like the songs. Great stuff.
CL: I actually don’t think there are any low points to this album, which is a big call from me who hates everything. All the songs sit really well together, and even if you listen to them individually they still hold up. THIS IS THE SHIT GUYS.
When would be the best time to listen to this?
CL: If National Lampoon’s Vacation is anything to go by, singing ‘Mockingbird’ is a great way to pass the time on the long trip to Wally World. I can’t find the clip with it on the internet so just watch the whole movie again.
NK: I hate the National Lampoon movies so much. Urgh. This is an album for all occasions. Although potentially not when you’re heartbroken, it’s too cheery for that. Skip it if you’ve been left at the altar, but any other time get stuck in.
CL: On a serious note, this album is absolutely for all occasions. Totally agree. Listen to it now.
Why has this album been included on the list?
CL: BECAUSE IT’S FULL OF STONE-COLD BANGERS! Truly, this is so, so solid, there isn’t a bad song on here.
NK: It’s so damn good.
CL: It’s sort of bizarre though because there are some real girl-power numbers on here, like ‘You Don’t Own Me’, but then a couple of tracks later, on ‘Wishin’ and Hopin’ we’re talking about doing the things he likes to do and wearing your hair just for him? So… a bit inconsistent there Dusty, a bit confusing. BUT IT’S ALRIGHT. I CAN OVERLOOK THIS.
Will you be listening again?
CL: YES. YES YES YES YES YES. THIS IS GREAT. SO SO GREAT.
NK: ALREADY HAVE MATE.
CL: YES. FIVE STARS. IT’S GREAT.
