Album no. 18/1001
This is a very live album recording. You hear EVERYTHING – people laughing, musicians knocking their shit over – it’s like you’re actually there – so that makes for interesting listening. It also demonstrates just how talented Miss Sarah Vaughn is.
Have you listened to this album before?
NK: I haven’t, but I’m keen.
CL: I haven’t heard it either.
NK: I really liked ‘Willow Weep For Me’, because it goes wrong but she rolls with it really well! At the start she says they “have to find a key” then with like a minute to go somebody knocks one of the microphones and everyone laughs, and then right after that she sings ‘I’ve really fouled up this song real well, according to that I’m through but they’re not so we’ll keep on singing willow weep for me’. It’s really funny! ‘September In The Rain’ is good as well, and I like her ‘Just A Gigolo’. Not as much as Louis Prima’s, but it’s still good.
CL: I disagree – I didn’t like her version of ‘Just A Gigolo’ AT ALL. Too fluttery. However, I do believe ‘September In The Rain’ was also very good. I thought your favourite would’ve been ‘Dancing In The Dark’ – even though there’s literally NO connection to the Bruce Springsteen version.
When would be the best time to listen to this?
NK: I reckon this is proper jazz club stuff. Check her out when she plays at the promethean (I wish).
CL: ON A CRUISE SHIP. Literally. I was on a cruise ship only a few months ago and there was this BANGIN’ young jazz duo that sounded very much like this. I saw them mmmm…almost every night. They knew who I was, and they came up and were like “Hey! Thanks for coming and watching us all the time!” and I stood there like a DICK because I was all flustered because the nice lady was talking to me. I mean, what?
NK: What? Why didn’t you just say ‘you guys are really good, I really enjoyed watching you’?
CL: Because I’m a fool.
Why has this album been included on the list?
NK: Well, it’s really good. Her performance is super relaxed, she chats to the audience when things go wrong, she handles the mistakes really well, and her voice is great. I really enjoyed this.
CL: It’s definitely an excellent live album. Back when audiences were so polite! You’d never be able to do something so intimate now. Someone’s phone would go off. Someone would be yelling. Someone would drop their entire drink over someone else. What a time to be alive.
Will you be listening again?
NK: Probably! I liked it quite a bit.
CL: I will certainly be keeping it on reserve for late nights with a whisky sour.
